Charlotte Collier-Hunter is a disabled, London-based ceramic artist and founder of Preaface Ceramics.

Working primarily in stoneware, she creates handbuilt vessels, functional ware and sculptural objects for exhibition, commission and everyday use. Her practice explores transformation, metamorphosis, fragility and resilience, with recurring references to the human body and the occult. These concerns emerge through form, colour and surface rather than literal representation, creating a considered tension between utility and sculptural presence.

Material research underpins her approach. Through handbuilding, glaze formulation, repeated testing, surface layering and oxidation firing, Charlotte investigates the interaction between clay, glaze and heat. She treats clay as an active collaborator, allowing material behaviour and firing conditions to influence the final work. Subtle asymmetries, tonal shifts and surface irregularities remain visible, preserving traces of construction and transformation.

Her ongoing experimental glaze research includes a distinctive blood like surface developed to withstand stoneware firing temperatures. In 2022, this research informed a restaurant commission of 90 ceramic pieces, demonstrating its application beyond the experimental stage while remaining an evolving area of practice.

Charlotte's exhibition history includes Food Art Fair at Ladbroke Hall, curated by Maisongb (September 2026), where she exhibited and sold work; Still Rooted at Cramer Street Gallery, curated by Yaiza Hernández Escobar and The.Art.Club.Collective (May 2026); and Primal Offerings: A Primal Eating Experience at Cramer Street Gallery, curated by Yaiza Hernández Escobar and Homesick Collective (January 2026). Earlier exhibitions include ALCHEMY! An Exhibition at Steamship, curated by Dr Gillian McIver (2022), alongside sales through London Studios.

Her collaborative practice extends into hospitality, design and bespoke commissions. She worked with Solar Reserve Rum to design and handcraft two distinct tumblers responding to the sensory profiles of its reserve rums for a limited-edition presentation case. Her work with Precious Scars Studio was presented at Battersea Power Station as part of London Made Me, supported by the Mayor of London. She has also produced ceramics for Maisongb and Saint Jacques in Mayfair and collaborated with Michelin-starred chefs on curated supper clubs.

Her work and writing has been featured by Urban and Hartley and Noble, with her exhibition work also documented in the catalogue for ALCHEMY! an Exhibition in Dr Gillian McIver's writing on alchemy, magic and contemporary art. 

Originally from New Zealand, Charlotte draws on an international life experience and a sustained connection to nature. Following a twenty year nursing career, she transitioned to ceramics, bringing an attentiveness to the human body and lived experience to her material enquiry. As a disabled and neurodivergent artist living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, she is also committed to improving visibility and inclusion within the arts.

Charlotte continues to develop a contemporary ceramic practice grounded in material investigation, technical experimentation and long-term collaboration. Across functional and sculptural work, she examines how objects acquire meaning through material presence, use and the passage of time.
